Hobby designer snacks her way around the world.
In 2004, I was peddling puzzles and pogo sticks in an independent toy store in Austin. I saved up to buy a button machine so I could make pins for friends' bands, and my hobby slowly grew into a proper business. At first I wasn't sure anyone would want my designs, but it turns out a lot of people share my love for pizza parties and smiling vegetables.
Then I married a traveler. The button biz followed us from Texas to Seattle and New Orleans, keeping me busy with new nerdy, wordy, and cutie patootie designs and occasionally helping pay for vacations to places like Asia and Australia. In 2016, my husband got a dream job offer, and I decided to leave the buttons behind as we traveled to live in Tokyo and eat katsu curry on Friday nights.
I kept the shirts though! I'm so happy to keep designing because the clothes in my shop are printed by a cool guy who runs his own t-shirt shop in Los Angeles, California. For design inspiration, I foster dogs from a local rescue, take daily walks by a river, learn to cook like a local, and sample every new flavor of Japanese chips that I can find.
